Part creationAlthough new products are designed top-down, product models are built bottom-up. Creating part models is the first step towards new product designs. In order to peserve the origional design intent, features in your part models share relationships with other features inside and outside of your model. Later on, parts you create will be assembled to parts other users create. Probably the biggest change when switching from 2D AutoCad to 3D Pro/ENGINEER is that you are creating 3D part models and not drawings. As you work on your project, keep in mind that your part models have volume, surface area, and mass properties. They can be rotated and viewed from any angle, and are anchored in space by datum planes you assign. You will make the actual 2D manufacturing drawings from your models in another step. We will cover 2D drawing techniques in the section entitled Drawing creation. |
